  • Summer Events 2017

    Vacation Bible School

During GADGETS & GIZMOS VBS we will celebrate how every child is uniquely wired and wonderfully made in the image of God. Our Gadgets & Gizmos VBS is geared to capture your child’s imagination about his/her Creator so he/she can discover how we are all made by God, made for a relationship with Jesus, and made to love others.

Join us June 19-22 for family dinner beginning at 4:30 p.m. (only $4 per person) then VBS 5:30-8:30p.m. as we discover how the Creator of all things created us to know and love Him. “Let your light shine so others can see it. Then they will see the good things you do. And they will bring glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16 (NIrV)

    Middle & High School Camp

On June 28 - July 3, our combined middle and high school camp will be at Crossings Camp at Jonathan Creek, which is near the Land of Lakes. Each student has the opportunity to choose from a wide variety of activities, including gaga ball, kayaking, arts and crafts, water sports, human foosball, and even zip lining! In addition to activities, there will be teachings, times of worship, small group Bible studies, and lots of free time at the lake.

Summer camp is an experience you do not want to miss out on! The next price increase is on May 10th. A non-refundable $75 deposit reserves your student’s spot.

  • Good Friday Experience - April 14th

    April 14th, 2017
    9:00 am - 7:00 pm

The Good Friday Experience at Severns Valley is a self-guided tour through a depiction of the major events of Christ leading up to the crucifixion. Beginning in the lobby, you will pick up a guide to help you meditate on each aspect of Christ’s week. You will move to the Atrium where you will spend time preparing yourself spiritually to draw near to God. Then you will enter the Worship Center and move through each of these scenes:

    • The Last Supper
    • Pieces of Silver
    • The Garden
    • His Cross
    • Instruments of Suffering
    • The Curtain
    • Oil & Spices
    • Finishing at...Our Cross

The entire tour will take approximately 45 minutes.

It will be open 9:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. You can go through it individually, as a couple or as a family. We will have a special children’s guide to help parents explain each of the scenes. You don’t need to worry about this being overly graphic for your children.

    Parents

The Good Friday Experience is a perfect way for your children to learn about the real meaning of Easter. By going through the different stations they will see, smell, taste and touch as they learn about the days leading up to the crucifixion. We have preschool, children and adult booklets that will help you explain all that they will encounter. Don't miss this opportunity for this spiritual experience with your entire family.

  • The Insanity of God

Mark your calendars for March 27 at 6:00 p.m.

Celebrate Recovery at Severns Valley will host the showing of The Insanity of God movie at the State Theatre in Elizabethtown. This Lifeway/IMB produced is about the persecuted church through the eyes of Nik and Ruth Ripken. Nik and Ruth were colleagues and are Bev’s and my personal friends.

This true movie account shows the suffering experienced by the persecuted church and the faithfulness of those believers as they share Christ and follow Him in the most dangerous and difficult circumstances. It will touch your heart and you will be encouraged by the accounts of faithfulness and hope of those walking in Christ. You will walk away challenged and humbled in your own walk with Christ.

So, invite a friend or neighbor to come with you. Remember, this movie is PG-13 because of the violence and suffering in it.

    Pastor Ray

  • The Future is Now

Every great movement of God has started with prayer. Beginning Monday March 6th, we as a church family will be starting a 20-day prayer emphasis for The Future is Now. What we are about to embark on as a church is something that is not humanly possible, but through God is possible. We want to see what God can do through each of us. To do this we will spend the next 20 days praying, listening and obeying God.

Prayer guides are available in the hallway right outside of the Worship Center or in the back of the Worship Center. You can also download a digital copy by clicking on this link: The Future is Now Prayer Guide

  • Daddy Daughter Date Night

On Friday, March 24, from 7:00-9:00 pm we invite you to our Daddy-Daughter Date Night. We had close to 300 in attendance last year and we hope there will be more dads and daughters to join us this year.

The theme for the evening is “50’s Night.” There is no particular dress required but poodle skirts, rolled up jeans, slicked back hair and black leather jackets are encouraged. This will make for some great pictures.

Here are a few reasons for you to bring your daughter to this event:

    • The first thing is that it is a unique event. Where else can you get together in a safe setting with a bunch of other like-minded people and have a fabulous time that is specifically geared toward dad’s and their daughters?
    • The second thing is that memories will be built. It will be one of the highlights that your daughter(s) will always talk about experiencing with you.
    • The third thing is that everyone will have a really fun time. Games, craft stations, activities, photo booths, delicious desserts and more will fill the night.

    Registration

The cost is $15 per family, which means the price is the same no matter how many daughters you bring. The deadline to register is March 22nd so we can make the needed preparations for the evening.

Step 1 – The first step is to register by the deadline March 22nd. You can register at the registration kiosk after services on March 12th or March 19th. You can also register online.

Step 2 – The next step is one in which we encourage you to take your daughter(s) to eat at a restaurant of your choice, and then to come to the church at 7pm for dessert and other snacks.

If dad is not available, the mom can choose an adult male family member or friend to be the daughter’s escort.

  • Lighten Up

    LIGHTEN UP

We are delighted to invite you to our Lighten Up event, taking place March 7th, from 6:30pm-9pm! We have teamed up with author and speaker, Rachel Lovingood, for the purpose of bringing ladies closer to God, each other and to the vision we have for the future of the Sevens Valley Women’s Ministry!

A few months back, we asked those in attendance at our Old Fashion Christmas event, to take a survey on what they felt they needed out of their Women’s Ministry. We have fervently prayed over those survey cards, and this event is a direct response to the yearning of so many women.

Women are seeking community like never before. As a Women’s Ministry, we want to see our ladies rejoice in friendship and genuine connection by simply getting to know one another, and laugh while doing it! What a beautiful gift God has given us! There are few things in life more disarming than a smile, so please, come prepared to laugh, smile and to get to know your sisters!

In getting to know each other, we are also thrilled to welcome several guests, dedicated to sharing God’s grace here, near and far. Our very own, Severns Valley Worship team, four featured community ministries, and our friend, Rachel Lovingood, known for her dynamic speaking and generous use of comicality, have all teamed up to lead, inspire and challenge us as we seek to mobilize our Women’s Ministry, and “Lighten Up” a world desperate for Christ.

Ladies, we are overjoyed to invite you to this event, and have every confidence that you will leave, having been fed both literally and figuratively. We look forward to journeying with you during this time of worship, fellowship and meaningful discussion with a side of cheesecake! We hope you can attend.

For questions please contact Lauren Botts.

  • Meals Needed for Warming Shelter

Rather than endure a long night in bone-numbing frigid temperatures, the homeless or temporarily displaced in our community are met with a comfortable cot, warm blankets, a hot meal, and compassionate company during the cold winter weather.

Room in the Inn warming shelter is hosted by Helping Hand of Hope, Warm Blessings soup kitchen and the Hardin County Ministerial Association.

Meals are greatly needed at this time. If you would like to volunteer or to help provide meals contact Bunni Hinton at hinton_frances@hotmail.com.

  • Inclement Weather - Stay In The Know

The onset of winter means we could potentially be postponing different events, classes, games or services depending on the severity of the storm. How can you find out if something has been cancelled or postponed at Severns Valley? Here's the best ways to find out from Best -----> Worst:

    • Website - Go to svbc.cc to find out the latest info. We'll update our home page as soon as a decision is made.

    • Come to the church

  • Year End Giving

This Christmas season we encourage you to be generous not only in the gifts that you give to family and friends, but also in the gifts you give to the Lord. Please consider giving sacrificially to the World Missions Offering by using a World Missions gift box from one of our Sunday services in December.

If you need a convenient way to make regular offerings or if you plan on making an additional gift before the end of the year, please check out our electronic giving options

For those needing to make year end gifts in person, the financial office will be open on December 30th.

  • To The Shepherded At Severns Valley

Our lead shepherd at Severns Valley Baptist Church, Dr. Bill Langley, has been elected the 2017 President of the Kentucky Baptist Convention (KBC) at its recent annual convention. All of us who know and sit under his biblical teaching and preaching were not surprised by their choice of him as president this year. In fact, we applaud that decision and rejoice at the leadership and shepherding skills he brings to the office of KBC President.

Given the chaos in our nation and the difficulties we face nationally and locally, the KBC found itself needing a shepherd for 2017. Dr. Langley was the best choice for the days we are facing. He has a shepherd’s heart and is concerned about the KBC, its churches and its members. He knows Jesus is the only answer for all we are facing as a nation and as the local church. He is Christ-centered in how he faces life and how he leads. He knows God’s Word intimately and uses it to help those of us who are facing the difficulties and struggles of life.

Dr. Langley lives his life daily in Christ as he models and encourages us to be Christ-like in our lives. Those of us who know him can attest to that. He is a man of prayer and he challenges all of us to pray. He is a man whose heart breaks when he sees lostness in those around him. This brokenness causes him to share Christ with the lost from the pulpit and as he meets people. He points people who are struggling to the hope, the help and the healing which is found only in a personal relationship with Christ.

This role as KBC President will require a lot from Dr. Langley. He will be called upon to speak and represent Kentucky Baptists throughout the year. He will be called to shepherd pastors in our state. He will be asked to step up and step into the chaos which we may face as a state and nation speaking on behalf of KBC pastors and churches.

As a church, we have a role as Dr. Langley serves as KBC President. First, we must pray for Dr. Langley and his staff at Severns Valley. As he takes on the mantle of the KBC presidency, not only will it demand much from him, but it will require his staff to shoulder more responsibilities. Let us commit to pray for our Severns Valley pastors and staff. As we do with any leader, let us also commit to pray for his wife and family because the responsibilities as our Sr. Pastor and KBC President will demand much from our lead shepherd and his wife. Let us join one another and pray for his health and strength. Finally, we need to pray God will be glorified through Dr. Langley’s leadership in the coming year at Severns Valley and at the KBC. And for those times when Dr. Langley has to be away from Severns Valley, let each of us make a commitment to continue to be dedicated in our prayer support, in our attendance, in our tithes, in our giving, and in our serving at Severns Valley as we continue to make much of Jesus.

As a church and as a shepherded people, let us all covenant to pray for Dr. Langley, for Severns Valley and for the KBC every day in the coming year. And, let us pray many will come to know Christ in 2017 because of our testimony individually, as a church and as the KBC under the leadership of Dr. Bill Langley.

    Praying together in Christ,

    Dr. Ray Hicks

  • An "Old Fashioned Christmas"

    Dear Women of Severns Valley,

Greetings on this lovely fall morning! The holidays seems that much closer today, so Christmas music it is! I am very excited about our women’s Christmas event this year. It is something a bit different than what we have done in years past, and I believe it will be a special time for all who attend.

Tickets are on sale at the registration kiosk after church services and online. The tickets are only $5. It is an “Old Fashioned Christmas” at the Historic State Theater in downtown Elizabethtown on December 1st from 6:00-9:00 p.m. The evening will consist of heavy hors d’oeuvres and plenty of homemade holiday desserts with time to mingle together while listening to our favorite Christmas music. We will have tons of giveaway gifts for you and a special old-fashioned treat that I decided to keep a surprise. You can’t miss this!

We have rented the whole facility at the State Theater -- the gallery where we will serve the food and then on through the lobby leading to the beautiful theater where you can eat, mingle and enjoy the rest of the program. A side note … the theaters’ concession stand will be open, too, if you are a person who must have the traditional popcorn and coke with your movie. (This is not included in our cost. That price will be the usual theater prices.)

Our feature film will be The Nativity. It is a beautiful movie we all decided would be a meaningful choice to begin the Christmas season focused on the actual story of the season. It is a gripping storyline told so wonderfully from Mary and Joseph’s perspective. I felt like I was literally transported to the scene where it all began. I was so moved as I viewed this movie, to not only hear the story as we usually do each year, but to also see how it truly might have been for the birth of our King. It was a very powerful experience, and I hope it will be as meaningful to you as it was for me. I can’t wait to see it again on the big movie screen.

This year we wanted to give something back to women in our community. We are asking that you bring with you on the night of the event one nice lotion, soap or candle (from somewhere like Bath and Body works). We have 40 sweet women who are clients at Clarity Solutions For Women right now. This will be an easy way for us to bless other ladies who need to feel pampered.

Bring a friend or family member and join us December 1st for an Old Fashioned Christmas.

For any additional information needed, call the church office and ask for Marlinda.

    See you there!

  • Giving Online and Text 2 Give

To offer our church members multiple ways to give, we have expanded our options for you to continue to support the ministries of Severns Valley. Those options now include giving online via your computer, smart phone, tablet and by text message.

Giving online or by using your mobile device requires setting up a user account to our church database. It’s a fast and very helpful way to not only give easily but also stay connected to your church family. Our online database is literally an online church directory giving you information that in the past was only available via a printed directory.

How do I give using my computer?

To give online you must create an account to access the church database. If you have not set up an account go here: Using the Church Database

    After setting up your account:

    1. Log in using your username and password.
    2. Go to the menu link, Giving, then click on Give Now
    3. Enter the information asked for.
    4. You can give via checking account or credit card.
    5. You can give one time or set up a recurring gift.
    6. After you have given, you will receive an email verifying your gift.

How do I give via my smartphone and tablet?

If you haven't downloaded the ACS Church Life app click on this link: Using the Church Database

After you have downloaded the app:

    1. Login using your username and password that you established for the church database.
    2. It automatically opens to the People page where you can search for members of Severns Valley.
    3. To give you will need to click on the link in the top left corner of your screen.
    4. Click on the “$ Giving” button.
    5. Then you will need to enter in your information to give.

Congratulations! You now have access to give via your mobile device!

How do I give via a text message?

(If you have given in the past via text messaging, these are new instructions. You will need to use these instructions from now on.)

    • Text SVBC to 73256 to give using your text messaging. Standard text messaging rates may apply.
    • You have the option to give to specific funds by using the (keyword) in parenthesis listed below:
      • General Budget (General)
      • Building Fund (Build)
      • Missions World (World)
      • Lottie Moon (Intl)
      • Annie Armstrong (Nation)
      • Eliza Broadus (State)
      • Nicaragua (Nic)
    • As an example, if you wanted to give via text messaging you would:
      • Enter 73256 as the number
      • In the text field you need to enter SVBC
      • Then enter the amount you want to give
      • It would look like this: SVBC $10. (All money given in this manner go to the General Budget)
      • If you wanted to give to the Missions World fund it would look like this: SVBC World $10
      • If you wanted to give to the Building fund it would look like this: SVBC Build $10
    • The first time, you'll be directed to fill out a form with your credit or debit card information.
    • You can give any dollar amount that you desire. You can give at anytime from anywhere. Once you click "Donate" a confirmation message will automatically be sent to you.
    • We suggest saving this number to your contacts as SVgive so you can remember it for future use.

Now is a great time to consider using eGiving. Through on-line giving and text giving options you can make your tithe/contribution, give to the general fund, building program or any of the church’s major mission offerings at any time or anywhere.

    Worship Arts Expo

For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.” – Romans 11:29

Humans are creators. It’s just what we do. Whether you sing, play an instrument, write poetry, or create a masterpiece with ink and paper, you create. At Severns Valley we believe God has given us our gifts and the ultimate achievement and goal for those gifts is to use them for His glory and renown.

That’s why our Worship Arts department is striving to grow. We’re calling all of you creative-types to join us for a time of community and dreaming as we look ahead to how God can use our gifts to further His work and His Kingdom.

We’re looking for singers, whether you’re classically trained or learn by listening. We’re looking for musicians; maybe you play saxophone, guitar or a harmonica. We need storytellers, those who have a way with words. We need artists, maybe you are a passionate photographer, or you prefer paint and canvas. Whatever it is, God has given you that gift and we would like to help plug you in to the Worship Arts Community at SV.

We would love for you to join us on Thursday, August 25th to find out more information. Call 270.982.2074 and ask for Marsha or email mdowell@svbc.cc.

    On-Campus Groups
It's a great Sunday to check out an On-Campus Group if you are not already involved in one. Small Groups are where relationships are developed, where you can interact, discuss, laugh and even cry together. There is a group that meets at 7:45 a.m. or choose from many others that meet at 9:00 and 10:45 a.m. Visit svbc.cc/on-campus-groups or come by the Information Kiosk for more information. joe@svbc.cc

    This is Really Happening...Garrett Cone

It finally hit Amy and me when we got home Sunday evening, looked at our house full of dishes, clothes, and our son's toys...this is really happening. We knew that our life was about to get a little more hectic, but I didn't care. I couldn't contain my excitement, but at least my joy didn't come out like a teenage girl at a Justin Bieber concert. God has called us to Elizabethtown, my hometown, but He has not called me home, He hss called me to Severns. Amy and I have been praying continuously for God to reveal His will to the church and us for what seemed at times both a long and short process, but His timing has been perfect.

God is going to do some amazing things this summer at High School and Middle School Camp. I cannot wait to hear the stories of life change, but I am very excited to see how God will move these students to reach the thousands of students who are in this community. With that being said, we ask for your prayers.

Pray with thanksgiving for the foundation that has already been laid for SV Students. Pray for God's will to be the driving force behind the future of the student ministry. Finally, pray how God would use you to help reach the next generation for Christ.

Amy and I look forward to our upcoming move (no matter how hectic). We look forward to meeting and getting to know you all, but most of all we look forward to serving alongside God's people at Severns Valley. Thank you all for seeking God's will with us. Let's love God, love people, and make disciples!

    In Him,

    Garrett Cone

    Sending the Frymires and McNeils

In Acts 13, the church in Antioch had likely experienced some level of comfort with where they were and the leadership they were under. “In the church,” there were “prophets and teachers” (Acts 13:1) who had taken leadership over them and they had gotten used to, learned to appreciate and were perhaps even led to Jesus by these men.

However, it didn’t last forever. “While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and (Paul) for the work to which I have called them.’ Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.” (Acts 13:2-3) Notice here that Paul and Barnabas aren’t leaving upset. They aren’t displeased with their role in the church. In fact, it seems that this church is doing well! While they were worshiping together, the Holy Spirit called these two men to be set apart for new ministries so that the gospel of Jesus Christ would advance.

We have an incredible opportunity right in front of us at Severns Valley. This very thing has happened with Jay Frymire and Michael McNeil. The Holy Spirit has set apart these men and their families to be sent out for new ministries in Oklahoma and Vermont. We get the great opportunity to send these men out well, so that the gospel of Jesus Christ might be advanced.

The North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention has recognized the latest movement across North America and hopes to be at the forefront of this movement. “The New Testament model for starting new churches is simple: churches plant churches.” ( https://www.namb.net/church-mobilization/)

Many churches would love to be in our position. Severns Valley is in a great location geographically, positioned near a thriving seminary producing young church leaders and many people with a heart to change the world with the gospel of Jesus. We believe, even in our losing of individuals, the kingdom of God will see great growth and gain as a result of our sacrifice.

We ask that you join us on Sunday, June 26 at 4:00 pm in the Atrium. We will have a time of Q&A with the Frymires and McNeils to discuss their upcoming transitions. We will learn about the people they will be ministering to, how we can pray for them and perhaps even how we can be a part of church plants in the future.

This is an exciting time for our church and I hope you will join us!

  • Meet Garrett Cone - Prospective Student Pastor

We are excited to introduce Garrett Cone to you, the man we believe God has led our Student Pastor Search Team to call as the new Student Pastor. Garrett and his wife, Amy, have a two year old son, Beckett, and are expecting another child in September.

Garrett has served in student ministries spanning over a period of ten years in Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas and most recently in Georgia. He lived in Elizabethtown during high school and graduated from John Hardin High School. His college education began at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and transferred to Asbury University in Wilmore, KY where he graduated.

Garrett states his desire is to lead an energetic and engaging Student Ministry that will reach their community for Christ and grow disciple-making disciples. Those who have served with him in Student Ministry describe him as being a very hard worker with a heart for evangelism. Garrett is known to pour into the lives of students. He is also very relationship oriented to students, parents and volunteers.

The Student Pastor Search Team has been in the process of seeking God’s will for this position throughout this past school year. The seven members of this team have spent much time in prayer and in open discussions throughout the process. The team sees Garrett’s tremendous passion for Student Ministry. It is evident that being a Student Pastor is the call that God has placed on his life.

Having been a resident of this area, Garrett is very familiar with our town and county and expresses his excitement about having the opportunity to come back to this area. He is very excited about the opportunity to minister to our students and to lead out in reaching many more students and families for Christ.

Below are opportunities for you to meet Garrett and his family:

    Saturday, June 18
9:00 am – Garrett will meet with Student Leadership
11:30 am – Garrett will meet with Middle and High School Students

  • Young Adults This Summer

Hi, church. Can you help me spread the word this summer?

Maybe you didn’t know, but we have a college and young adult ministry that meets every Thursday at 7:00 pm downstairs in the student area. We’ve been meeting for a few years now, and the night has grown into a great time of worship, Bible study, and community. We also drink lots of coffee!

This is how you can help:

A lot of college students come home for the summer and I know I don’t know all of them! If you know of a student who has just come home or if you know of another young local person that is seeking a church, could you please point them to us or to myself? We would love to have them get involved. Thursday night is by far the best way for a college student to get plugged in at Severns Valley.

We have just started studying through the book of Daniel, and we will be there most of the summer. Also, there will be off-campus events such as pool parties, trips to the drive in and bon fires. Can you pray with me that Jesus Christ would capture the hearts of this generation? Letting them know what is going on at Severns Valley is a small step towards that. Even better, share with them how Jesus has captured your heart!

  • Daddy-Daughter Date Night

For all dads who have daughters - you have the opportunity to start this summer off in an incredible way!

On Friday, May 13th, from 7:00 - 9:00 pm we are having a Daddy-Daughter Date Night. We had over 300 in attendance last year and we hope there are even more dads and daughters who join us for this fantastic night.

The theme for the evening is “Hawaiian Luau.” There is no particular dress required but shorts and summer wear are welcomed. Grass skirts or any other type of Hawiian look for the girls is encouraged along with a loud-colorful Hawaiian shirt for the dads.

As a dad of daughters, there are several things that make this event such a great opportunity for you:

    • The first thing is that it is a unique event. Where else can you get together in a safe setting with a bunch of other like-minded people and have a fabulous time that is specifically geared toward dad’s and their daughters?
    • The second thing is that memories will be built. It will be one of the highlights that your daughter(s) will always talk about experiencing with you.
    • The third thing is that everyone will have a fantastic time. Games, craft stations, activities, photo booths and more will fill the night.

    Registration

The cost is $15 per family, which means the price is the same no matter how many daughters you bring. The deadline to register is May 11th so we can know how many are coming so as to make the preparations needed for a great time.

STEP 1 - The first step is to register by the deadline (May 11th). Come by the registration kiosk after services on May 1st or May 8th. You can also register online.

STEP 2 - The next step is one in which we encourage you to take your daughter/daughters to eat at a restaurant of your choice, and then to come to the church at 7:00 pm where there will be dessert along with other snacks.

If dad is not available, the mom can choose an adult male family member or friend to be the daughter’s escort.

We look forward to seeing you there.

    Joe Thomas, Family Pastor

  • SV Serve EXPO

    Sundays, April 17th & 24th
    following services

The SV Serve Expo is a fantastic event. There will be 12 different areas set up in the Atrium for people to get information on over 30 different opportunities to serve. (Yes, there will still be coffee and donuts available at the normal times.) The Expo will be available immediately after each of the worship services on April 17th and 24th. Representatives from each of the serving opportunities will be available to answer questions and will have their own specific informational flyers.

The service of volunteers that carry out all of the many things that are done through our church is vital. In reality, outside of some paid personnel, the ways that Severns Valley impacts the lives of people are done largely through a committed base of volunteers. The Expo is a way to make everyone aware of the high value and appreciation that the Severns Valley Staff and leadership place on all of our wonderful volunteers.

We constantly hear from our volunteers of the blessing they receive as they use their talents and abilities to serve the Lord. That is ultimately what a believer is doing, no matter what the area of service is, offering up their efforts to the Lord Jesus himself. The hope of this Expo is to both inspire and inform so as to give more people the opportunity to get in on the incredible blessing of serving. A missing element in many Christians lives is the offering of themselves in some area of service.

There is an old saying that relates to those about to buy a new car, “Kick the tires and try out.” There will be information cards available in the bulletin and around the Atrium that allows each person to indicate which area of service they are interested in. Leaders of that ministry will contact you about the areas of service you indicated on the card. Filling out the card does not obligate anyone in anyway but allows each person to take another step in the possible discovery of a way to serve. We encourage everyone to just “kick the tires.” In other words, learn about an area to serve you are interested in and then try it out for a little while. Most people have to serve in several different ways before they find the best fit for them.

Don’t miss out on the blessing of serving. We hope to see you at The SV Serve Expo.

  • Men's Pancake Breakfast

On Thursday, April 14th we’ll be celebrating the two-year anniversary of men’s prayer time. All men are invited to join us at 6:00 a.m. in the Atrium for a free pancake breakfast and celebration of the many things God is doing. Even if your schedule does not allow you to regularly meet with us on Thursdays, please try and arrange your calendar for this special time of celebrating how God answers prayer.

  • Unanimous Action to Move Forward

The church was unanimous in taking the following actions in the special called business session on Sunday, March 20, 2016:

    • Elected the following positions: Moderator - Bill Evans (2yr), Church Council - Kevin Ray (3yr), Doug Ball (2yr), and Dr. Kay Brown (1yr).
    • Adopted in general principle, the master plan for campus improvement and expansion as presented by the Master Planning Team in the Town Hall Meetings and the Church Family Business Meeting on March 20, 2016.
    • Commissioned the Leadership Selection Team to select men and women from the membership of Severns Valley Baptist Church to form a building team.
    • Authorized the Building Team to obtain proposals for the Design/Build of a Worship Center, as well as the renovation of existing facilities to better serve the needs of all age groups.
  • Where Are They Coming From?

Over the past month, from February to March 2016, we've noticed a trend of where our first time guests live.

    Can you see it?

In the map above, the cluster of pins in red are guests who are traveling to SV from north of Elizabethtown. With the new Patriot Parkway, Fort Knox residents can easily travel to Elizabethtown within minutes.

We found that interesting and our prayer is we will continue to build relationships in our communities and extend our reach throughout this region for Christ.

Will you join us in getting the word out about Good Friday and Easter?

  • Facebook Profile Pictures

We have another great way for you to engage in conversation with people you are connected to this Easter. Save and use the following profile pictures on social media.

    Blank Cross

On Palm Sunday, March 20th change your profile picture to the cross without words when you set out your yard cross.

    Cross with Words

On Easter Sunday, March 27th change your profile picture to show "He Is Risen!" when you turn your yard cross around displaying the same wording.

  • Invite Your Friends

You know many people who don’t know Christ. We’re making it easier for you to enter into a spiritual conversation with them. Below are just a few ways to begin a conversation about Christ and invite them to the Good Friday Experience and one of our three Easter services.

    Easter Cross
If you don’t have an Easter Cross, be sure and pick one up today. They are located in the Hallway just outside of the Worship Center. Please place the cross in your yard without the lettering towards the street on Palm Sunday. On Easter Sunday turn the cross around with the words “He is Risen” facing the street.

    Invite Cards
We have plenty of cards for you to take to work, school, your kids sporting events, and even leave at places where you may have an appointment. If you own a business, pick some up to place in your lobby. They are a great way to invite people.

    Facebook
A great way to invite someone to the Good Friday Experience and also our Easter services is through Facebook. Below are the steps to take to make the biggest impact:

    • Like the Severns Valley Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/severnsvalley/
    • Look for the Good Friday and Easter events and click on the button that says: “Going”
    • Then invite your friend to attend these events.

    Twitter & Instagram
We have created graphics specifically for Twitter & Instagram. Post this message with these links along with the graphic for each event:

Good Friday – The Good Friday Experience will change your life! Find out more: http://www.svbc.cc/good-friday-experience #goodfriday #severnsvalley

    Easter Services – Come with me to worship Jesus on Easter. 3 services: 8am, 9:30am & 11:00am http://www.svbc.cc/easter #severnsvalley

  • Easter Services

    April 16th, 2017
    8:00, 9:30 & 11:00 am

What should I expect on Easter Sunday?

Services start on time. We'll have three services on Easter Sunday at 8:00, 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. During the services, Bible classes are offered for children who are preschool age and under. We suggest arriving 15 minutes early to check your child in so that you won’t miss any of the service.

    What should I wear?

We’re more concerned with meeting your real life needs than with what you are wearing to church. So, you can wear just about anything and fit right in at Severns Valley. People feel comfortable wearing suits, dresses, jeans, shorts, and many other combinations. What you choose to wear will depend more on the weather than what others are wearing.

    Where do I park?

We have parking places located close to our facility for guests.

    Directions to Severns Valley

We look forward to celebrating the Risen Savior with you this Easter!

  • Daylight Saving Time

A reminder to set your clocks ahead one hour on Saturday, March 12th. See you Sunday morning!

Thanks for helping us get the word out.

  • Town Hall Meetings & Special Called Church Family Meeting

  • Weather Update 1.23.16

We will be having church tomorrow with our regular schedule of 2 Worship Services and Small Groups. A HUGE thanks to all those who helped get our parking lot and sidewalks cleared. There may be some slick spots tomorrow morning due to melting and re-freezing. So be very careful as you are walking into the buildings.

We hope to see you in the morning!

  • Weather Update - 1.21.16

We know everyone is aware of the pending storm. Due to the projections, the church office will be closed on Friday, Jan. 22nd. We will also be canceling all activities for Saturday at the church. Our reasoning for doing this is for the protection of our staff and for those coming into our facilities. If the projections are correct, we will need to focus on snow removal so we can come together for worship this Sunday morning. We can’t remove the snow if we have a parking lot full of cars. Our staff and volunteers will most likely need all of Saturday to prepare for Sunday.

We know this will disappoint many and we are sorry. But, we want to make sure that we have everything ready for the church family to gather together on Sunday. Please be careful if you must get out this weekend.

  • Weather Update - 1.20.16

Due to the continued snowfall, we have closed the offices for today and canceled all activities for today and tonight. Please be careful if you must get out.

We will continue to monitor the weather for the rest of the week and provide updates via www.svbc.cc, Facebook and Twitter.

  • Weather Update - 1.10.16

    UPDATE 1.10.16

All Worship Services and Small Groups are as scheduled this morning. We are salting the parking lots and sidewalks, but there still remains slick spots. Please be careful as you drive to church, enter our property and as you walk into the buildings.

  • Hope for the Holidays

When we find ourselves in the holiday season - the weight of life... our struggles... our hurts, hang ups and habits - these feelings can be a dense fog on our lives.

During the holidays we can feel the sting of fractured relationships, unfulfilled expectations may knock us down and words of thankfulness and joy might seem like distant mirages.

So where can we find hope?

You can find hope for your present and your future in Jesus Christ. If this is what you're looking for in your life, I want to encourage you to come to Celebrate Recovery.

Celebrate Recovery (for adults), The Landing (for teens) and Celebration Place (for kids) meets every Monday night from 6:00 - 8:00 at Severns Valley. There you'll find hope, encouragement and a renewed relationship with Christ. You'll also find others who've found this hope in Christ and they will become your new forever family.

I look forward to seeing you on Monday nights as we allow Jesus to give us the hope we so desperately need, especially during the holidays.

    Pastor Ray

Annual Meeting Agenda and Pastor's Conference Schedule

  • Women's Prayer Time

Are you a passionate about lifting up praise, thanksgiving and making supplications to the Lord in prayer?

Are you in need of prayer yourself, desperate for God to work in some area of your life?

If you answered "yes" to either of these questions, then plan to join us on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 am in Room 215 as we lift up prayer request and praises to our Heavenly Father.

Psalm 145:18 reminds us "The Lord is near unto all them that call upon Him, to all that call upon Him in truth." And Philippians 4:6 urges us to "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God."

God wants us to pray about everything, regardless of how large or small a matter may seem, because everything can be affected by prayer.

James 5:16 tells us "The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much." So "Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need" (Hebrews 4:16).

"If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land" (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Join us as we lift our voices in prayer and praise!

  • The Gospel of John

In his famous book Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis makes this statement: "A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic--on the level with a man who says he is a poached egg--or he would be the devil of hell. You must take your choice. Either this was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us!"

Join us as we embark on a journey through John’s gospel. In these pages we will see Jesus Christ for who He truly is!

  • Be Part of the Team | Upward Flag Football & Cheerleading

While fans are cheering for their favorite football teams you can be a part of the game in a way that can change the lives of entire families.

Boys and girls in K-6th grades are being invited from all around our area to participate in Upward Flag Football at Severns Valley. Games begin on September 19 with practices beginning August 30.

By serving in one of these ways, you can make a difference in the lives of families:

    Football or Cheerleader Coach
Coaches serve one game each week for seven Saturdays and a one-hour practice each week. There’s a brief devotion for you to share at practice each week that presents God’s love. As a coach you’ll be a Christ-like example to both children and their families. First time coaching? We’ll have instructions for you that will allow you to be a tremendously effective coach.

    Referee
Giving your time to encourage players during the games will show God’s love to children and their families. All games are on Saturdays and we will schedule you to referee the games your schedule will allow. You’ll be instructed in the rules and procedures for being an excellent Flag Football referee.

    Scorekeeper
Take part in making a difference in lives through your involvement as a scorekeeper in this year’s Upward Flag Football season. Games take place over the course of seven Saturdays. We’ll educate you on the scoring system and how the equipment works.

    Concession Stand Attendant
Welcoming and friendly attendants take inventory of snacks and drinks, make them available for purchase under our concessions tent, and sell concession items to families and fans.

    Halftime Devotion
Flag football volunteers are encouraged to share a short 3-4 minute devotion with the crowd during halftime of every game.

Coach/Referee Training: There will be a short training session on Saturday, August 15 at 9:00 am in the Atrium. Refreshments provided.

For more information about how you can be involved in this year’s Upward Flag Football and Cheerleading season come to the kiosk outside the worship center following Sunday services or contact our Upward Associate Director Chris Dunham (chris@svbc.cc).

For registration and evaluation information, visit our Upward Sports page.

  • Severns Valley Calls Andy Botts

“Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!” (Psalm 133:1)

We saw a beautiful demonstration of unity this past Sunday evening as the people of Severns Valley came together to unanimously affirm Andy Botts as the new Worship Pastor. Thank you for your prayers and support.

Pray for Andy, Lauren, Ashton and Cooper as they make their transition to the Bluegrass State. Pray also for the great people of Woodland Community Church. (We know exactly what they’re getting ready to go through!)

God has been faithful through this entire process. I want to echo the sentiment of Worship Pastor Search Team Chair Tim Peace and say a huge thank you to Joseph Weaver, Marsha Dowell and Dianne Gardner for the wonderful leadership you have given these past 12 months.

I love you. I’m grateful for every one of you! And I am proud to be your pastor!

  • The Cafe' Experiment - Week 1

Sunday, June 7th was our first experiment day for The Cafe' at Severns Valley. Overall we thought it went pretty well, especially when you consider it was something totally new and we didn't know what to expect. There was certainly a lot of curiosity and questions. This was an exciting day as we watched so many of you participate and have great comments on the food that was served. We are continuing to listen to you as we tweak The Cafe’.

Here's a recap of that day:

    • We had a total of 253 transactions
    • The top selling items were:
    1. Coffee - 162 (not counting free refills)
    2. Adult Meals - 112
    3. Eggs - 67
    4. Bacon - 63
    5. Juice - 45
    • Total sales were - $1,205
    • Total profit - $660

As we stated, all profit from The Cafe' will go to missions. We have tried to set the prices low to make this Cafe’ affordable for families to gather at a table to fellowship on Sunday mornings. Even in doing this, we were still able to make a profit that will go to missions.

Over the past few years, God has opened some incredible doors of opportunity in Nicaragua. We are confident that, in the future, He will be opening up even more opportunities in other parts of the world.

Here are just a few things that we could possibly do in Nicaragua if The Cafe' were to be open a full year:

    • We could build a church building like the one in El Platanal.
    • We could provide salaries for 14 pastors each year.
    • We could install 5 water wells.
    • We could install 20 water purification systems.
    • And there is so much more we could do!

The next experiment day for The Cafe' is Sunday, July 5th.

On this day we will have our new coffee equipment set up and running. Hopefully, no more delays in getting a cup of hot coffee in your hands.

Please continue to pray for our Missions Ministry. Thank you Severns Valley for being so excited about sharing the Gospel Here, Near and Far.

  • Worship Pastor Search Recommendation

The Worship Pastor Search Team is thrilled to announce its recommendation that the members of Severns Valley Baptist Church call Andy Botts as our next Worship Pastor. Andy and his wife, Lauren, along with their two children, Ashton and Cooper, will be with us June 18-21 for an “in-view-of-a-call” weekend.

In Andy’s own words: “I’m a follower of Christ. I’m flawed. I’m forgiven. I’m a husband to an amazingly beautiful woman. I’m a father to a gorgeous little girl and the coolest little man alive. I have a strong background of faith and music, and I have the pleasure of being able to blend the two as my calling and ministry.”

Andy comes to us from Bradenton, Florida, where he currently serves as a Pastor of Worship & Media at Woodland Community Church (which is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention). Andy has been serving on the staff at Woodland since he graduated from college in 2007.

Andy oversees the entire Worship Arts Program at Woodland. He plans, develops, leads and/or oversees all the weekend services. This includes two contemporary services (one on Saturday night and one on Sunday morning), as well as a traditional worship service on Sunday morning. He also supervises worship and media for the church’s satellite campus, Woodland Parrish. In addition to supervising several staff members, Andy gives oversight and direction to a team of more than fifty dedicated volunteers.

Andy has a Bachelor’s Degree in Worship Leadership & Biblical Studies from the University of Mobile. He also has a degree in Worship Leadership Studies from Integrity Worship Institute.

Andy began leading worship in his youth group when he was only fifteen years old. While in college, he traveled the country leading worship with the “World Changers” organization. At the University of Mobile, Andy was personally taught, influenced, and disciplined by several of the great worship leaders in our nation today.

For almost a year, the Worship Pastor Search Team (which is chaired by Tim Peace and includes Susan Byers, Rose Harris, Adam Henderson, Marlin Jiranek, Marnell Knight, and Ashley Ray) have prayed and sought God’s will concerning our next Worship Pastor. They are completely unified and absolutely enthusiastic about sharing with you the culmination of their search. They are excited for you to meet Andy in person this next weekend.

Andy, and his family, will arrive on Thursday afternoon. He will rehearse the band on Thursday evening. He and Lauren will meet with the pastoral staff on Friday, and then have supper with the search team and their spouses that evening. Saturday will include a special choir rehearsal, as well as time to meet with our deacons, and their wives. Andy will lead worship in both services on Sunday morning. At 3:30 in the afternoon, Andy and his family will be available for church members to meet and greet in the Atrium. A special business meeting will take place at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. At that time the Search Team will formally present their recommendation to the church.

This will be a busy but productive weekend. Please be in prayer for the Botts family, as well as Severns Valley. May Christ be honored as we gladly discern His will and boldly do it!

  • Collide: When Culture Collides With Biblical Faith

Do you remember the story of Rip Van Winkle? You say, “Remember it? I feel like I’m living it!” The difference is, we can’t remember falling asleep. Yet, the momentum shift in our nation has been staggering and, as we look around us, the entire cultural landscape has radically changed!

What do you do when your faith is under attack? How do you live when contemporary values collide with biblical principles? Truthfully, this isn’t anything new. Living out our faith and taking a noticeable stand for Christ have never been popular. But God isn’t concerned about our being popular … He wants us to be productive!

The Apostle Peter tells us, “But even if you suffer for doing what is right, God will reward you for it. So don’t worry or be afraid of their threats. Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it.” (1 Peter 3:14-15 NLT)

  • Director of Administration Celebrates 35 Years

In 1980, Severns Valley Baptist Church was looking for someone to serve as an assistant to the pastor. When the application process had ended and the interviews were over, a woman was hired who, in many ways, would become the face of Severns Valley for the next 35 years!  And what a truly wonderful woman Linda Polley is!

Linda has served alongside four senior pastors: Dr. Verlin C. Kruschwitz, Dr. J. Howard Cobble, Dr. Billy Compton, and Dr. Bill Langley. During Dr. Compton’s tenure, Linda was elevated from the position of Pastor’s Assistant to Administration Director. For more than a decade, Linda has served this great body of believers in that capacity.

Those who have served on committees and teams at Severns Valley appreciate the grace, strength and competence of this elegant lady. Not only is she incredibly capable in everything she does, she makes working together so much fun! Her joyful attitude is absolutely infectious!

Linda Polley’s respect goes far beyond the fellowship of Severns Valley Baptist Church. She is also esteemed and admired in our association, community and state. Over the years, she has coordinated and overseen several annual meetings of the Kentucky Baptist Convention at our facility, and she has served on the board of the Western Recorder for the convention.

Words fail in my attempt to describe Linda Polley, because she is so many things to so many people. She is a beautiful Christian…faithful wife…wonderful mother… doting grandmother…and dedicated coworker in the gospel. But for those of us who know her well, it is our privilege to call her “friend.”

    We love you, Linda!

    Pastor Bill and Sheri Langley

…and the grateful family of faith called Severns Valley Baptist Church

  • When to Set Out Your Cross

    Yard Crosses

This Easter we’re asking each of our families to put a cross in their yard. The cross is a visible witness that will give opportunities to share with neighbors about the hope of Christ. If you need a cross we still have some at the church. One per family, please.

    March 28th after 7:00 p.m.

Put your cross out on Saturday night with the WHITE SIDE displaying toward the street.

    April 4th after 7:00 p.m.

Turn your cross around to display the lettering “He Is Risen!” on Saturday night.

On April 5, take your cross down and store it for next year.

  • Secret Church

    Secret Church Simulcast
    7pm - 1am April 24, 2015
    $10

How many Bibles do you have sitting around your house, or on your phone? Five? Ten? We certainly have no shortage of the Word being distributed in our community. However, this is not the case for many of our Christian brothers and sisters around the world today. In many places it is very difficult for Christians to access the Word of God. In some countries, people don’t have the means to purchase a Bible. Others have no place to go to purchase one. In some countries, the Bible is only allowed to be distributed in the non-native tongue, or to purchase a bible one must be registered with the government or  be a foreigner.

So what do they do? They meet together in each other’s homes as often as they can, often in secret, because practicing Christianity is not legal in their country. But sometimes meeting as often as they can means meeting only once a month, therefore, the congregating church will meet for as long as they can to intake as much of the Bible as possible at one time.

Secret Church is an evening where we empathize with these brothers and sisters and commit to meeting together for an extended period of time for one night to bask in the glories of the One who bought our lives with His own.  It is an annual simulcast featuring David Platt, current president of the International Mission Board, that will be covering current issues surrounding Christ, Culture, and a Call to Action. As you join us for a full evening of deep study in God’s Word, here’s what you need to know:

    • It’s long! The simulcast is from 7pm to 1am, but you can always leave earlier if you need to.
    • You'll receive a thorough study guide if you register by the registration deadline of April 12.
    • There will be worship and prayer time interspersed, as well as brief breaks for food and fellowship.

    Registration ends April 12:

  • Easter Yard Crosses

March 15th & 22nd in the Worship Center

If you would like a cross please pick one up as you exit the services on Sunday.

The yard crosses will be available on March 15 and 22.

  • Weather Closings - March 6th & 7th

    Weather Closings - March 6th & 7th

Just as there's a shortage of milk and bread at the grocery store, there's also a shortage of tractors to plow 18+" of snow. We're having a difficult time clearing our drives, parking lot and walkways. A big thanks to those helping remove snow today! We are hopeful to get a lot done Frday and Saturday so that we can worship together on Sunday.

To be able to clear all the snow, we must have the parking lot empty of cars. This means we will not be opening the office on Friday and all activities for Friday and Saturday are canceled. We know this will disappoint some, but we are concerned for the safety of those on our campus and also focusing on getting things ready for the Lord's Day.

Pray for warm weather, sun, snow melting and for those working tirelessly outside. We will continue to update you concerning closings on the website, Facebook, Twitter and TV.

If you must get out, please be careful!

Update: Weather Closings - February 19th

We are closing the church office for the entire day. Due to the sub-freezing temps and the wind, we are now dealing with ice and snow drifts on our entrances, parking lots and walkways. Please continue to pray for our custodial crew and volunteers as they try and get everything ready for Sunday services and Small Groups.

    Weather Update - February 19th

Due to the sub-freezing temps and the wind we are now dealing with ice and snow drifts on our entrances, parking lots and walkways. Because of this we are closing the church office this morning. We will try and open the office at 1pm. All programs and activities are cancelled through Saturday night. We will continue to update the web site to keep you informed.

Please be in prayer for those who are at home and cannot get out. This would include many of our Senior Adults and those who are Homebound. Take a moment and pray for them.  If you know someone who is a Senior Adult, give them a call and check on them. See if they need anything. This is one way of living out Mark 12:30-31,

"And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

  • Weather Closings Feb 18-21

    Office Schedule and Closings/Cancellations

Our custodial crew along with our snow removal crew has worked all day long. At this point we do not have the entrances, parking lot and walkways cleared enough to have Wednesday night activities. Weather forecasts are predicting the possibility of more snow and record low temperatures tonight through the end of the week. These conditions will only make snow removal more difficult. Because of this we believe we need to make a tough decision.

All Activities/Programs/Classes Are Cancelled Wednesday Through Saturday Night

Our focus needs to be preparing for Sunday Worship Services and Small Groups. For this to happen our staff and custodial crew needs to focus on snow removal and preparing for Sunday.

Our plans are to open the Church Office beginning tomorrow at 10am each day through the end of the week, weather permitting.

Please be praying for this coming Sunday services and be careful if you must get out.

A Woman's Heart by Beth Moore, Book: $16
Perhaps no Old Testament event so dramatically illustrates God's persistent desire to relate to His children as the building of the tabernacle in the wilderness. Through the tabernacle God initiated a deeper relationship with His chosen people by bringing reconciliation and revealing His glory. And certainly, no Old Testament event so richly prefigures the coming of the true Tabernacle, Jesus Christ. This study will challenge you to prepare your heart, like the holy of holies, to become a home for His love and glory - a dwelling place for the Most High God. Ten weeks.

Restless by Jennie Allen - MOPS Group Study, Book: $9
Restless gives women a practical plan to identify the threads of their life and how to intentionally weave them together for God's glory and purposes. Author Jennie Allen doesn't suggest women add one more thing to their to-do list, but instead invites them to stop and listen where they are. She frees them to be themselves and to see themselves as valuable.

    ADULTS

CORE Classes: We are excited about how God has led us to offer CORE classes and can't wait to see what He does through them in the spring semester. We are offering Foundations of the Faith taught by Pastor Bill, and two new classes: Spiritual Disciplines led by Pastor Jeff Wilson and An Overview of the Old and New Testaments led by Pastor Joe Thomas.

    Foundations of the Faith
This course is designed to introduce you to the foundational doctrines of the Christian faith. We want to help you not only be introduced to these doctrines but also to understand how they will help you grow in godliness. Our desire is to equip you with the information, and then help prepare you to be able to share your faith, answer questions others may ask you and ultimately help you to confidently be able to share what you have learned with someone else to become a disciple of Christ.

To register for this class, click on this link:

    Spiritual Disciplines
Those who follow Christ are to be daily conformed into the image of our Savior. How does this transformation take place? What is my role in growing in Christlikeness? Do I have a responsibility to pursue Christ after He's saved me? And if so, what must I do? We believe there are practices that we can learn. They are called disciplines. Our desire is to: teach you these disciplines, for you to put them into practice, and then for you to share them with others.

An Overview of the Old and New Testaments
Want to know how you can have a better understanding of what you are reading in the Bible? What about the reason different books in the Bible read so differently than other books in the Bible? Do you know the different places that Jesus can be seen in the Old Testament? Do you know why this ancient book called the Bible is so important during modern times? Come and join us in the Bible survey class where answers to these questions will be discussed. We will take a very informative and exciting journey through the most influential book ever written, the Bible.

  • Know When to Seek Biblical Care

    Biblical Care in Family/Marriage

Nearly every week I hear of a couple whose marriage is in crisis mode. A crisis can be brought on by adultery, communication problems, disinterest, drifting apart, anger, addictions, parenting issues, or numerous other reasons which tend to be pretty self-centered. When the crisis hits, most couples try to manage it themselves. This management stage of dealing with a marital or family crisis can last years. After trying to work on things with no results for a long time, something usually snaps and the person(s) run to God and the church.

One thing I wish for people is they seek godly biblical help immediately instead of waiting. The best time to seek help is when things first start to go wrong. The waiting and waiting does not help. In fact, it hurts because it allows the crisis or problem to harden and we are less open to direction from the Lord and His Word. When your car starts to make noise or overheat, you don't just say, "It's nothing, everything will be fine." You take it to the mechanic and ask, “What's wrong? Can you fix it?” Our marriages and families are far more important than vehicles. When things get heated or distant in our marriages and families it’s the time to run to godly counsel.

As we begin this new year, ask yourself, "Am I/we in need of godly biblical care?" All of us struggle with something. All marriages have times where there is tension or difficulty. All families hit a crisis at one point or another. All of us are in need of godly biblical care in our lives. The real question is - do you and I know when that is?

Godly biblical care is a good thing. It can mean the difference between going into a full-blown crisis or preventing such a crisis. Your marriage/family can benefit by gaining insight and direction for the days ahead. In this dark world, we want our marriages to be testimonies for the Lord.

I challenge you to do a marriage/family check-up. Ask yourself if you are in crisis or heading for a crisis. Talk with each other and make a plan to get some godly biblical care for your marriage or family. Call the church and set up an appointment with Dr. Ray Hicks or with one of our other pastors. The healthier we become in our marriages and families, the better we become in relationship with one another. The biblical care we receive in a marriage tune-up will strengthen our faith and our witness. But even more important than that, it will strengthen our relationship with Christ. Take a moment and evaluate where you are as a couple or family, then take the steps necessary to get some godly biblical care. It may be the best thing you do for the Lord this year.

  • International Missions Offering

As followers of Christ, we are called to give of the blessings we have received to bless others. When we give to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, we are helping send and support our missionaries who share Christ’s love with the lost and hurting.

How does my giving make an impact?

When our church partners with IMB and gives to the Lottie Moon offering, missionaries are able to share the gospel with unreached people groups, train believers to start new churches, assist in the planting of new churches, show Christ’s love to those in distress, and, most importantly, work to spread the kingdom of God.

According to IMB’s 2013 Annual Statistical Report, our missionaries shared the gospel with 1.7 million people, trained 23,000 nationals to start new churches and helped plant 6,200 churches. While those statistics are exciting, there are still 4 billion people who remain lost. More giving will allow IMB to send more missionaries so that more people are reached for Christ!

One hundred percent of the offering is used in this one sacred effort.

    How much should I give?

The Lottie Moon Christmas Offering goal for this year is $175 million. This goal is based on real needs as we Southern Baptists work together to reach the remaining peoples for Christ. When the Lord calls us to give, He knows how much we are able to give – and what He wants is a gift given from a joyful heart.

    How can I pray?

Paul tells us in Romans 10:1, “Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God concerning them is for their salvation” (HCSB). We can commit to pray for specific people groups named at imb.org/one. We can pray for our Southern Baptist missionaries who are sharing the Good News with the lost and being a light in the world. And we can pray for the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, that we Southern Baptists will continue supporting our missionaries sent from our churches – and give even more to send more waiting to answer God’s call.

Severns Valley’s goal is $80,000. Would you consider giving from a joyful heart to the Lottie Moon Christmas offering?

  • RUTH: A Story of Romance & Redemption

How long has it been since you’ve made a really “bad” decision?  Some of the choices we make come with devastating consequences. And sometimes that leads us to believe that, because of our foolish choices in the past, we’ve forfeited any shot at God’s blessing in the future.

If you’re tempted to think that way, the little book of Ruth has a big message of hope and encouragement for you!  Join us as we open the pages of Ruth to see the providence and grace of God in an unexpected path to great joy!

  • State Missions Offering

Acts 1:8 reveals both a call to serve and the power to serve. Jesus said to his disciples, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8 HCSB).

This year’s state missions emphasis is on service. We serve as we pray for Kentucky missions. We serve as we give sacrificially. We serve as we personally share the gospel with others. We serve as we go and minister in the Name of Jesus. And in every avenue, the Power to Serve comes from the Holy Spirit.

    Where does my offering go?

Today, the State Missions Offering (SMO) provides vital support for church planting, evangelism, and mission work in Kentucky. The lives of unborn children are being saved by crisis pregnancy centers funded by the SMO. Inmates are hearing the gospel, trusting Christ, and being baptized by local churches through ministries funded by SMO. Women in the “adult entertainment industry” are being shown a pathway to freedom and salvation by ministries funded by SMO. Extra support is being provided to local associations, church plants, collegiate ministries, Disaster Relief ministries, and a host of other gospel-centered works in our state. ---Dr. Paul Chitwood

  • Core Classes Begin September 3rd

    Foundations of the Faith

For the past several months, Sheri and I have been building a new house. If you’ve ever built before, you know the most important part of any structure is the foundation. The same thing is true of life. Jesus said:

“I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.” (Luke 6:47-49 NLT)

To help make sure you’re building your life on a solid footing, we have added a core curriculum that begins with the class, Foundations of the Faith. As your pastor, I am so excited to be taking Wednesday evenings this fall to teach on several beliefs that are essential to the Christian faith.

“God’s truth stands firm like a foundation stone!” (1 Timothy 2:19 NLT)

  • The Big Picture

Some people request the window seat when they fly in an airplane. From their vantage point, high above the terrain, they’re able to take in the bigger picture. There are times when all of us need to do the same thing, spiritually speaking. Who am I? Why am I here? What is my purpose? What is it that really matters? It’s far too easy for the answers to these important questions to get lost in the minutia of our daily routines. For that reason, we’re getting ready to lift ourselves above the mundane so we can take a good look at what really matters.

Join us on August 10, 2014 as we begin a brand new series of messages that will help us focus on…The Big Picture.
